CEMETERY UPDATE: The Road Reconstruction Project for St. Michael's Cemetery is about to get underway in a few weeks. Excavation work of the existing roads will begin on June 3rd and project completion should take one week barring no prolonged periods of rain which could extend completion. Beginning on Monday, June 3rd, the Cemetery will be closed to all traffic and will not re-open until Saturday, June 15th as the new base materials and asphalt need time to settle and set properly. Sincerely, St. Michael’s Finance Committee September 1, 2023
Dear Parishioners, At the request of and in consultation with Precision Roads, Inc., the paving contractor awarded the bid to remove and install all new roads within St. Michael’s Cemetery, it has been decided to defer this project to the spring 2024 season. Several factors have contributed to this decision. First, the rainy 2023 season has delayed the contractor from completing projects ahead of St. Michael’s Cemetery and thus have caused a lengthy backlog. Since June 1, 2023, this area has received slightly over 18” of rain. Second, the excessive rainfall has contributed to a very high water table within the Cemetery, which is not conducive to laying new asphalt. All existing roads will be excavated to a depth of 8”-10” to install a new base prior to installing new asphalt. With a high water table, the contractor has informed us that there is a risk of the binder material separating from the final finish asphalt coat if the paving and base material are not allowed to set properly under normal dry conditions. With a contract valued at $121,930.00 and because it is your monies that are funding this project, we have decided to wait until the water dissipates to a safer level before em- barking on this project. The contractor has agreed to honor the above contract amount next spring. In the meantime, plans are underway to fill the existing holes in the roads with a suitable temporary fill material to get us through the Fall and Winter seasons ahead of us. We realize that all parishioners were looking forward to new Cemetery roads this year, but we cannot take the risk of expending substantial parishioner monies given the possibility that the new paving might fail after installation, especially when it is within our control to prevent such an occurrence. We thank you for your patience and understanding and will provide an update once the project is about to commence in the Spring. Sincerely, St. Michael’s Finance Committee May 29, 2023
